A COMMUNITY clear-up campaign is underway in Wingate.

Improvement work by Durham County Council is being carried out in Wellfield Road, North Road, Salters Lane, Front Street and surrounding areas as part of operation Spruce Up.

The scheme involves the sweeping and clearing of footpaths; painting and cleaning of street furniture such as bollards, railing and benches; replacement of old bins; removal of weeds and chewing gum; replanting of shrubs and renewal of road markings.

Pupils and staff from Wellfield School are picking litter and youngsters from Wingate Community Nursery School have planted tubs outside of the nursery with summer bedding plants.

A poster competition for pupils at Wingate Infant and Junior schools is being held to educate children to be environmentally-friendly and the importance of disposing of litter responsibly.

Councillor Brian Stephens, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships said: “It’s pleasing to see local residents, schools and partners in support of Spruce Up.

“It encourages others to keep our communities clean and tidy.”
