WORK is to start today on a seven-month upgrade of a town’s sewerage network.
Northumbrian Water is spending £1.35 million on an upgrade of the system in Peterlee, with work due to be completed in early November.
Work will centre on Bracken Hill Industrial Estate, with the existing sewer replaced with 1,250 metres of new pipes in Hunter Road, Swan Road, Whitehouse Way and Doxford Drive.
This new sewer will reconnect with the rest of the network near the Fire Station.
Where possible, sections of the pipe will be installed on grass verges to minimise traffic disruption.
However, there will be a lane closure and traffic lights when work takes place in Hunter Road and Swan Road and there will be a full road closure with diversions when work takes place in Doxford Drive.
Project manager Ian Davison said: “The relocation of the sewer will help protect the environment.
“We continue to work closely with nearby businesses about our planned works as well as with Durham County Council, to minimise any disruption and inconvenience.”
