POLICE have confirmed they are treating a blaze at a derelict pub in Shotton Colliery as arson.

Firefighters were called out to deal with the fire at the former Goldmine pub in Cowley Street, Shotton Coliery, near Peterlee, at 5.15am on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said the alarm was raised after flames were spotted in two-storey premises.

An aerial ladder platform was sent to the scene, as well as four appliances – two from Peterlee Fire Station, one from Wheatley Hill Fire Station and another from Seaham Fire Station.

Two jets and breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the blaze.

A police spokesman said: "Thankfully, nobody was injured.

"It is deemed to be a deliberate act.

"At this time we are reviewing all available lines of inquiry but kindly request that anyone with any information contact Peterlee CID on 0191-3752611."
