CUSTOMERS at an opticians have donated thousands of pairs of unwanted glasses to charity this year.
Since the end of the summer, Specsavers in Byron Place Shopping Centre, Seaham, has been given over 2,000 pairs of old specs for the charity Vision Aid Overseas (VAO).
While some pairs were scratched, bent out of shape or no longer in fashion, they were still perfect for VAO, which recycles them and helps people in some of the world’s poorest communities to see clearly.
VAO’s work includes giving people eye tests and treatment and supplying much-needed glasses.
Store director Eric Thompson said: “We have been overwhelmed by the number of pairs of glasses we have collected in such a short space of time – the generosity and community spirit amongst our customers is wonderful.”
To find out more about VAO or to donate old glasses visit Specsavers Seaham, 10b, Byron Place Shopping Centre, Seaham.
