PLANS for a major new discount food store in east Durham look set to be approved next week.

Food retailer Aldi is proposing to a new store off Yoden Way, between Horden and Peterlee, with the pledge of 30 new full and part-time jobs.

Durham County Councils planning officers are recommending the authority’s area planning committee (central and east) approve the plans when they meet on Tuesday.

The site is currently cleared, but was previously occupied by Peterlee Building Supplies.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We are delighted that our plans for Yoden Way have been recommended for approval, and hope the planning committee will recognise the significant benefits a new store would bring to the area, including a multi-million-pound investment, and up to 30 jobs.

“We received a fantastic response from the local community when we consulted them earlier in the year.

“Over 95 per cent of people supported our proposal, highlighting that a new store is much needed, would increase choice for local residents, and offer convenient access, especially for those without access to personal transport”.

He added: “Should our plans be approved, we will work with our construction team to develop a timetable for when we can get on site and build the new store.”

A report to the committee meeting notes the site has been a focal point of anti-social behaviour, including the dumping of waste.

There have been 113 letters supporting the plans and three letters of objection.

Objectors argue the development could have an adverse impact on existing retail businesses, have a detrimental effect on residential amenity, lead to the loss of green space and create traffic problems.

A planning officer’s report submitted to the committee meeting says concerns have been taken into account and adds: “The scheme would protect the vitality and the viability of existing centres while providing the new food retail facilities in an area where there are currently very limited facilities of this kind.”

Councillors have been recommended to approve the plans, subject to a number of conditions including a legal agreement securing a contribution of £10,000 from the developer to enhance biodiversity on land next to the site.

An Aldi spokesman said: “If residents have any queries in the meantime, then they can contact us on the Freephone project information line on 0800 298 7040.”
