POLICE have warned residents of an east Durham town about leaflets falsely bearing the force badge and naming an individual as a 'racist and paedophile'.

Durham Constabulary has acted after 20 letters were been sent to addresses in the Easington area.

Police say at first glance they may look as though they have come from Durham Constabulary since whoever has sent them has used the force badge and included a photo featuring police officers.

But the forces wants to stress "these have definitely not been sent by anyone in this force”.

Acting Inspector Paul Footes said: “The letters contain allegations about a named person which are completely false, and causing them distress.

“If anyone else receives one of these through the post we would suggest they destroy the letter and think nothing more of it. There is no need to hand it in.”

The leaflet, reported here as printed, states: "The National Party Racist & Pedopfile (sic) Member (name deleted) person is now in your area, so please be carefull with your children and report him strait away to the police if you see him acting suspiciously".

Police are making inquiries to trace whoever is sending the letters as they may face criminal charges.
