A FESTIVAL of music, film and fun has been staged on the North-East coast.

More than 20,000 people attended Seaham Carnival, which got underway at the end last week, attracting people from across the region.

Organised by Seaham Town Council, it has been running for around 20 years, but this is the first time it has been a four-day event.

The carnival was launched on Thursday when there was a range of music at the Big Brass Bash on the town’s Terrace Green.

On Friday, there was a screening of The Bodyguard and Grease 2 on a large outdoor screen with Frozen on Saturday, followed by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Gallipoli.

On Saturday, there was also a display by the Rhythm School of Acrobatics followed by the Old Grey Whistle Band.

There was a host of free activities today, (Sunday, July 19) including Scales and Tails Animal Encounters, circus workshops, a climbing wall, a penalty shootout and a fairground on Church Street.

Deputy town clerk Paul Fletcher said: “It has gone brilliantly and has exceeded our expectations.

“The atmosphere has been happy, friendly and joyous, especially when the was shining. It just shows what Seaham can achieve.”
