POLICE have released a CCTV image after a man was seriously injured in a street attack in east Durham last week.

A 35-year-old man from Horden, near Peterlee, was attacked on the town’s Coast Road at 9.20pm, on Wednesday, July 1.

He was walking near to Dulai's off licence when his assailant got out of a silver Peugeot 206 and assaulted the him, knocking him against shop shutters and kicking him while he was on the ground.

The victim suffered a broken arm and ankle and has spent several days in hospital receiving treatment for his injuries.

Detective Constable Craig Hines, who is investigating the assault, said: "I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward and speak to the police.

“This is a violent attack on a member of the public who suffered serious injuries as a result.

“The area was busy at the time, it was still light, and viewing CCTV from the surrounding shops we know several people stopped to watch what was going on.

“It is those people we need to speak to.”

Police have issued a CCTV still image, which shows the suspect approaching the man. The attacker was wearing jeans, white trainers and a black vest or body warmer.

DC Hines said: “We would like to reassure the community of Horden that we believe this is an isolated attack and they is no need to be alarmed by this incident.

“We need to know who this attacker is and why his assaulted the victim, anyone who thinks they might have information should contact us immediately."
