HAIRDRESSING, barbering and beauty therapy students and staff from East Durham College have spent a week raising money for a national eye cancer charity.

A number of activities were held around the Peterlee Campus to help raise a final total of £144 for the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) as part of its 2015 eye cancer awareness week.

The event was organised by barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood who herself was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer, retinoblastoma, at six-weeks-old. It was successfully treated at the Sunderland Eye Infirmary.

Ms Scattergood said: “CHECT is a fantastic cause and it’s great to be able to help out whenever we can.

“We have had a brilliant week fundraising, with staff and students throughout the college coming together to join in and help us out in the salon.

“I just want to thank everyone that was involved and I am sure that the money raised will go to great use at CHECT.”
