ALMOST 90 drivers a day were caught speeding during a week-long enforcement campaign across Cleveland and Durham.

During the campaign, which ran in conjunction with the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) and took place between Monday, April 13 and Sunday, April 19, 607 offences were detected across both force areas - an average of 86 per day.

According to police, around two thirds of collisions in which someone is killed or seriously injured by a speeding driver take place on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less, which are often residential areas where children live.

Inspector Ed Turner, from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, said: “Speeding is one of the four main factors in a fatal collision and so it is disappointing whenever we find someone speeding as it means that they haven’t listened to our warnings and are risking their own life, aswell as the lives of other road users.

“Travelling at even just a few miles over the speed limit can be deadly, for example, driving at 35mph as opposed to 30mph can mean that a vehicle can take a further six metres to come to a stop.

“The limits are put in place for a reason; to protect people. Those people who have been found speeding as a result of our campaign will now be made to take a speed awareness course or will be issued with a minimum fine of £100 and three penalty points.”
