A HIGH street in east Durham is bucking the national trend by going from barren to bustling thanks to help from Durham County Council.

With targeted support, five previously empty, derelict properties in Murton, near Peterlee, are now home to four new small businesses with the final one expected to open in the coming months.

The turnaround has come about following the council working with the owner of the building to jointly invest in renovating the shop fronts and improving the interiors.

As well as the regeneration of the high street, bringing the properties back into use has also meant the creation of eight and a half jobs and an apprenticeship.

The now successful street has also encouraged more businesses to look at the area with further interest already expressed by another potential retailer.

Cllr Neil Foster, cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “The area was ramshackle and run down and a housing developer nearby was finding it difficult to sell properties.

"We wanted to do what we could to enhance the area.

“Wood’s Terrace is a brilliant example of the work the council is doing to support our local traders.

“By investing in high streets we’re not only boosting the local economy but helping pave the way for small businesses to thrive and create more jobs.”

He added: “It has become a place that people come to instead of somewhere they used to avoid.

“It is a model we would like to replicate elsewhere where we can try and work with businesses in what are challenging times."

Tracey Young, who has opened Tralou’s Florists with business partner Louise Horner, said: “I couldn’t have opened up my new business without the support and assistance from the council.

“It’s nice to be a part of a number of new small and independent businesses opening up within Wood’s Terrace, breathing new life into our high street."

The other businesses recently opened are Tantastic, Timeless Tattoo and GJ's Deli Cafe.

County council community economic team leader Julie Anson said: “We are now seeking expressions of interest from business in Murton, who wish to get help in improving their shop fronts.”

The council will be securing cash that has been ringfenced from the Dalton Park Phase Two development for masterplan priorities and business improvement grants for the area.

The money is expected to be available in April. Any businesses who are interested should call 03000 262001.
