AN EAST Durham sea cadet group is forging ahead with with renovations after securing funding from a local wind farm.

Seaham Sea Cadets, a group of young people aged between 10 and 18, won a £5,000 grant to help make sure their new HQ is shipshape to move into.

The Sea Cadets are among the latest organisations to benefit from the South Sharpley Wind Farm Community Fund.

South Sharpley wind farm operator REG Windpower initially donated £135,000 to the Fund, and will donate a further £6,000 annually for the 25 year lifetime of the project.

Grant funding is available for groups and projects that benefit people within a three mile radius of the wind farm.

The Sea Cadets are purchasing the ex-Royal Naval Club on Seaham sea front so that the group can do more seaborne activities, and hope to attract new members.

The building needs a lot of repair works and the Sea Cadets have been busy raising over £100,000 to complete the works.

The wind farm grant will help them lay a new floor.

Paul Barber from the Seaham Sea Cadets said “We are thrilled to receive this support from the South Sharpley community fund, it will enable us to get one step further to completing our renovations and the Sea Cadets can continue to go from strength to strength.”
