COUNCILLORS have backed plans to turn County Durham’s last coal mine into a nature reserve.
Easington Colliery pit closed in 1993 and the site was landscaped for wildlife and recreation six years later.
Today (Wednesday, October 15), Durham County Council’s cabinet backed proposals to declare the land, which it owns, a local nature reserve.
The move has been backed by miners’ leaders and Natural England.
