COUNCILLORS have backed plans to build new homes in a village, after hearing they were much-needed in the former pit community.

Durham County Council’s central and east area planning committee today (Tuesday, July 22) voted to grant Gleeson Developments planning permission to build 65 homes on land at Cain Terrace, in Wheatley Hill, east Durham.

Earlier, they had heard from local councillor Morris Nicholls that the homes were much-needed in Wheatley Hill and would enhance the village.

The new houses will be built on a former council estate, which fell into disuse and has mostly been demolished.

Councillor Alan Bell said he was unhappy Gleeson were not being asked to make any financial contribution, known as a Section 106 agreement, as part of the project.

Planning officer Alan Dobie said the scheme’s financial viability had been carefully assessed and it was not advisable to place any extra burden on the developer.

Cllr Patrick Conway said he accepted the explanation and there was a need to improve the site and build houses in the village.

The committee, meeting at County Hall, approved the scheme unanimously.
