DOGS could be banned from Seaham’s beaches during the summer.

Durham County Council is considering a dog control order that would be in force from April 1 to September 30 each year.

Next Wednesday, July 16, the council’s cabinet may order public consultation on the idea, which has been put forward by Seaham Town Council, before deciding whether to press ahead.

Similar rules have been brought in by other councils, including Hartlepool, Sunderland and South Tyneside.

Cllr Brian Stephens, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “The council and its partners have been making substantial progress in the regeneration of Seaham. The beach is a vital part of this, used by residents and visitors alike, particularly in the summer months.

“We feel that the beach experience can be further improved by keeping it free from dogs running loose and ensuring their mess is not left behind.

“Under these proposals we have sought a balance so dog owners will still be able to exercise their dogs all year round on the beach to the north of Seaham Hall car park as well as the promenade."
