SCHOOLCHILDREN have been presented with booklets to mark 150 years since the birth of mining leader Peter Lee.
Margaret Hedley, chairman of the Wheatley Hill Heritage Society in Wheatley Hill, east Durham, gave the booklets to children from Thornley Primary School.
Mrs Hedley said: “Peter Lee is very important to this area, for people who are 60 years old and over.
“We thought when this generation goes, children in school may not be made aware of him because teachers won’t know about him.
“So we produced this 12-page booklet which is a teaching aid, with the support of the Wheatley Hill Parish Council.
“Class sets will be presented to our local primary schools, so that his memory will be passed on to future generations.”
Mr Lee, who was born in Trimdon Grange, was elected delegate at the Durham Miners’ Conference, and later took on numerous roles including chairing the Wheatley Hill Parish Council, the local Co-Operative, Durham County Water Board, and serving as president of the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain.
