STARS will take to the fairway at a celebrity-packed golf day to raise money for a youth retreat centre.

North-east stars Alan Shearer, Ant and Dec and Tim Healy, will be joined by Strictly Come Dancing’s James and Ola Jordan and Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall at the annual charity golf day and dinner on June 1 at the De Vere Slaley Hall Hotel, in Northumberland.

The event will raise money for the Youth Village, a retreat centre for young people at Allensford, near Consett, in County Durham.

The event has been organised by Father Dermott Donnelly, Catholic priest and brother of Britain’s Got Talent star Declan Donnelly.

The Youth Village, which opened in 2010, has room for just under 100 staying in five large chalets, with a a games room, auditorium, spacious gardens, playing fields and a dedicated space for prayer and reflection.

It provides a space for young people, regardless of their faith, to be inspired and achieve their personal potential within a supportive Christian environment.

Father Donnelly said: "This golf day is such an important fund-raising event for us every year and I’m so proud and grateful that it’s always well supported.

"We simply couldn’t have built the Youth Village without it".

Other guests due to appear on the day include actress Poppy Jhakra, from Waterloo Road and Coronation Street, former Newcastle United players Steve Watson, John Beresford, Rob Lee and Lee Clark, and television presenter and musician Jonathan Wilkes.

A team of four, including breakfast, 18 holes of golf, drinks reception, evening meal, entertainment and charity raffle and auction, costs £650. Tickets for the evening meal alone are priced at £75 per person.
