DURHAM Wildlife Trust has organised a series of education events at its Rainton Meadows nature reserve near Houghton-le-Spring.

On Tuesday, July 17, youngsters are invited to Muddle in the Meadows and learn about the different types of bugs, beetles and flies that live on the reserve. It is also a chance to learn to identify meadow flowers and discover why the reserve is so important.

On Tuesday, September 18, there is a chance to meet the on-site bird ringer and discover how to identify different birds using eyes, ears and knowledge of their habitats. Take part in a feather forage to investigate the different types of feathers birds have.

On Tuesday, October 16 enjoy the changing of the season and investigate why leaves change colour and drop from the trees. Use leaf microscopes to inspire some woodland artwork and have a go at measuring the height and age of our trees.

On Tuesday, November 20, discover how wildlife prepare for the winter and help with some woodland management to create snug hideaways for animals.

On Tuesday, December 18, join a winter celebration, campfire and storytelling.

Activities are aimed at five to 11 year olds and take place from 10am to noon. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There is a £4 charge per child. Call 0191-584-3112.
