A CLASSIC car rally has raised around £400 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

The Festival of Transport at Durham County Hall took place on Saturday and was supported by the Sunderland and District Classic Vehicle Society.

Councillor Paul Sexton said: “Councillors Ivan Cochrane and Peter Oliver and myself, who are members of the society, along with Councillor Jan Blakey decided to do something to raise funds for the chosen charity of the outgoing chairman Councillor Bill Kellett.

“We called upon our colleagues in the society to help us put the event on. There were about 150 vehicles there, including old buses, classic sports cars and motorcycles.

“We also had a variety of cake stalls which volunteers helped out with.We charged £1 entry with all proceedsd going to charity.

“It had fabulous weather. About 200 people attended, which was excellent, considering we had the royal wedding and the the FA cup on, as well as the Flying Scotsman coming through region.”

The event was Cllr Kellett’s last official engagement as mayor and chairman.

He added: We plan to hold this event every year.”
