FINAL preparations are underway for the Tour Series as it makes its way to Durham on Tuesday.

Some of the UK’s best cyclists, including Commonwealth medallists Harry and Charlie Tanfield from Great Ayton, will take part in the event, which is hosted by Durham County Council in partnership with organiser Sweetspot.

Prior to the official races, which begin at 3pm, Durham School will run its own event, followed by a blue light race featuring staff from Durham Constabulary, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service and the North East Ambulance Service.

This year will see the Tour’s first ever hill climb race – a gruelling 500m up the cobbles of South Street – followed by the women’s race at 5.30pm, followed by the men’s race at 7.30pm and the podium celebrations at 8.45pm.

Riders reach speeds of up to 50km an hour on the challenging route, including steep descents, cobbles and climbs.

Councillor Ossie Johnson, Cabinet member for tourism, culture, leisure and rural issues, said: “Around 11,000 people came out to cheer on last year’s competitors and we are confident this year’s races will be just as exciting.

“The Tour really puts Durham on the map not only regionally but across the world and also contributes hundreds of thousands of pounds to the county’s economy.”
