A DURHAM city centre church is inviting people to come together and celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markel by broadcasting the service live on the day.
St Nicholas’ Church in Durham’s Market Place will be relaying the service live from midday on Saturday in addition to offering “tea, cake and togetherness” to celebrate the Royal Wedding.
The church has experience of hosting such events after the last royal wedding in 2011 when a host of people gathered at the church to celebrate and watch the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The church’s vicar, The Reverend Arun Arora, said: “There’s something about being together when celebrating a wedding. It’s so much more enjoyable for people to come together in one place and celebrate a public declaration of love – it’s what make weddings special. “Only a relative few will be able to see the wedding from inside St George’s Chapel in Windsor, but if you can’t see it in the chapel then come and see it in church. Royal weddings can be a time when communities come together to celebrate whether with street parties or family gatherings.
“We’re throwing open our doors and inviting people in for tea, cake and togetherness and to watch the wedding together.”
The church will open its doors at 10am on Saturday morning for its regular community coffee lounge and will extend its opening hours for the broadcast of the wedding.
