CHILDREN have been finding out more about the Commonwealth at an annual community event.
Brandon and Byshottles Parish Council hosted the event to mark Commonwealth Day.
Pupils from Brandon Primary School, Silver Tree Primary School, Ushaw Moor, St Joseph's, Ushaw Moor and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Esh Winning, attended along with other members of the community, including the Reverend Carl Peters, of St John’s Church, Meadowfield.
David Clegg, vice chairman of the parish council, read the Commonwealth Affirmation and raised the Commonwealth flag outside Brandon Carrside Youth and Community Project.
Children had the chance to find out more about the Commonwealth and spent time looking at the flags of its 53 member states.
Susan Howe, clerk of the parish council, said: “It’s a really nice event for the community to get together.”
The day was celebrated by communities across the Commonwealth and this year had a theme of “towards a common future.”
