A CHINESE lion roared through the streets of a city to mark the start of the year of the dog.

Crowds gathered in Durham to watch the city’s annual lion dance to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Performed by members of Oceans Apart Kung Fu Club, the traditional dance involves the lion throwing lettuce leaves around the city and is believed to drive away bad luck and bring a fresh start.

Councillor Bill Kellett, the Mayor of Durham, will be hoping he managed to secure a prosperous year for the city after catching the first “lucky lettuce”.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets and organiser of the city’s Chinese New Year celebration, said: “Many thanks to Oceans Apart Kung Fu Club, the Mayor of Durham and everyone who came along for another great Chinese Lion Dance in Durham this morning, celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Dog.”

Children also had the opportunity to take part in arts and crafts sessions, organised as part of the celebration.
