A NIGHTCLUB remained closed on Wednesday night out of respect for a student who died in a crush a week earlier.

Olivia Burt suffered fatal head injuries during a crowd surge as people queued to get into the packed Missoula nightclub, in Durham, just before midnight last Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the nightspot said: “Missoula Durham was closed on a voluntary basis out of support for the investigation and respect for Olivia’s family and friends.

“In light of that, whilst we are under pressure to re-open our doors as soon as is possible, we will only do so with the full support of both the police and licensing. We hope to be able to confirm an exact date in the next few days.”

Meanwhile, Durham Constabulary activated a website on Wednesday for witnesses to upload mobile phone footage of the moments leading up to the tragedy.

A joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 20-year-old natural sciences student was launched by Durham Police and Durham County Council.

Over the last seven days, officers have spoken to a large number of people who were in the queue to get into the nightclub on the night, but still want to hear from those who were closest to Miss Burt at the time.

Detectives leading the ongoing inquiry into the death of the first-year student yesterday revealed details of a major incident website set up to make it easier for witnesses to upload phone footage.

Detective sergeant Lindsay Banks-Brown, from Durham Constabulary’s Major Crime Team, said: “We are continuing our investigation to try to find out what happened to Olivia.

“There were several hundred people in the area at the time and we have spoken to numerous witnesses over the last week.

“But we are particularly keen to speak with any individuals who were in the queue at the bottom entrance to Missoula and who saw what happened.

“A Major Incident Public Portal has been activated, to make it easier for witnesses to report and particularly make it easier to submit mobile phone footage to the investigation team.

The portal can be reached at https://mipp.police.uk

Alternatively, witnesses can call Durham Police on 101.
