THE tradition of pilgrimage to the nation’s cathedrals will be examined in a talk by a veteran tour guide.
Lilian Groves, Visit England’s Tourism Superstar for 2016, is a long-serving guide at Durham Cathedral, having escorted parties round the place of worship for more than a quarter-of a-century.
She has developed a wide knowledge of the history of the cathedral, a well-known destination for pilgrims in the Middle Ages, many walking long distances to visit the shrine to the Northern saint, Cuthbert.
Her lecture, Visitors and Pilgrims to English Cathedrals, takes place in the Prior’s Hall, off College Green, behind the cathedral, on Monday, at 6.30pm.
It is free for friends’ group members, with a £5 charge for the rest of the public.
