A YOUNG boy was so moved after meeting a girl with a rare form of epilepsy he decided to do a sponsored swim to raise money for her.

George Matthews, of Bowburn, near Durham, who is being home educated, was visiting the charity Heel and Toe while learning about disabilities when he met five-year-old Lyra.

The four-year-old said: “I want to help Heel and Toe raise money for Lyra so that she is able to continue getting the classes that she needs to help her grow up to be big and strong like me.”

Proud mum Stephanie said: “He wanted to raise some money to help Lyra doing the thing he thinks he is good at which is swimming.

“Six months ago he couldn’t swim at all. He swims with Will Coulson of Aquacktic Swim School, in Newton Aycliffe, who has been very supportive.

“In June George managed to swim 10m, raising £400. On Friday he aims to raise £400, swimming 200m.”
