A TEENAGE racing driver is proving he is on track to a successful career after securing a top five spot at a national championships.

Charlie Fagg, 18, has been on an upward trajectory since climbing behind the wheel five years ago.

Following a “rapid progression” in the sport in the last few years, the driver claimed his latest victory at the weekend - finishing in fifth place at the British GT Series Championship at Donington Park.

The Durham teen was paired with 19-year-old Ben Green for the two-hour race which saw them compete against teams with a full season of competition and development.

Mr Fagg, a member of JRM Racing’s young driver programme, said: “I was very consistent and looked after the car as much as I could.

“I had a really good time out there and amount of support we’ve had this weekend has been absolutely astonishing.”

He added: “To think I led the race for one moment was crazy. It was magical and I think I got everything out of the car, and myself.”

The duo were racing in JRM’s Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 - a car said to be “notoriously hard to handle”.

Elliot Dason-Barber, JRM technical director said: “We were heavier than most and Donington is a demanding track on brakes so with all that taken in to account, the fact that we’ve performed competitively all weekend is brilliant. There’s lots of potential still to find in both the car and the drivers – next season will be exciting”.

College student Mr Fagg took up the sport as a 13-year-old and has enjoyed a number of victories including in the last year alone.

He has spent 2017 racing a Nissan 370Z in the GT4 European Series Northern Cup while he made a British GT4 debut at Spa-Francorchamps in July when he and Matthew Graham claimed both class victories aboard Ebor GT’s Maserati GranTurismo MC.

Elsewhere on the track on was Sedgefield’s father and son duo Simon and Owen Walton.

The pair battled it out in their Audi TTs for the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Cup. Owen placed third in the qualifying race but both failed to secure top positions later in the day.
