MENTAL health and crime will be the topic of discussion at a symposium as part of a week to raise awareness about prisons.

The event is being held at Durham Cathedral on Saturday, October 14 as part of Prisoners’ week and will be led by Sir James Goss, Presiding Judge of the North Eastern Circuit.

With its three prisons, Durham has one of the highest concentration of prisoners in the country.

The Very Revered Andrew Tremlett, Dean of Durham, said: “The level of social deprivation and mental illness among prisoners is extremely high and is closely linked to their offences.

“This symposium will give people the opportunity to ask questions about the connection between mental illness and crime and we look forward to a stimulating debate.

“It will raise awareness of these important issues which are so often overlooked.”

The event is free.

All are welcome but those wishing to attend should contact events@durhamcathedral.co.uk or call 0191 386 4266 to reserve a place.
