A WARTIME drama set in the North-East during the Second World War is to begin a week-long theatre run.

And A Nightingale Sang is to be staged at the City Theatre in Back Silver Street, Durham for seven days starting on Sunday, September 17.

Written by CP Taylor, the play follows the experiences of a working class family in Newcastle throughout the course of the war.

The story explores the family's personal relationships, preoccupations, troubles and joys, and is a rich, warm picture of home life in wartime.

The production is being staged by Durham Dramatic Society and opens with a 2.30pm matinee on Sunday, September 17.

Shows continue from Monday, September 18 to Saturday, September 23 at 7.30pm each night.
