UP to 1,000 members of one of the world’s largest fraternities will be gathering to celebrate its 300th anniversary.

Freemasons from the Durham Province are holding a special dedication service at Durham Cathedral on Thursday, September 7.

Up to 1,000 Masons and their families will be attending in full Masonic regalia to mark the occasion.

Freemasons up and down the country celebrated the 300th anniversary of the organisation earlier this year.

The service will be led by the Dean of Durham Cathedral, Very Revd Andrew Tremlett and will be attended by Provincial Grand Master Norman Eric Heaviside and the Assistant Grand Master and former Lord Mayor of London, Sir David Wootton.

The organisation will also be presenting ten local charities with donations.

Among those to benefit will be Sunderland Minster, which is getting £25,800 to refurbish a community centre, the Friends of Carlton Camp, based in Hartlepool, to provide a camping trip for around 100 children, the Cheesy Waffles project in Durham, County Durham Young Farmers and Ferryhill-based Enter CIC.
