A MAN jailed for carrying out a drunken car-jacking has had his resulting driving ban doubled.

Jason Dixon, 29, was given a two-year sentence at Durham Crown Court last month, after admitting aggravated vehicle taking, assault causing actual bodily harm, theft, plus driving without insurance or a licence.

It arose from an incident in Stanley, at about 8pm on May 28, as a man who knew Dixon was showing other friends his newly-acquired car.

Jonathan Harley, prosecuting, said Dixon approached and pushed him to the ground, where he kicked him repeatedly about the head.

Dixon then got into the Volkswagen Golf, using keys which dropped from the victim’s pocket, reversed and hit a kerb before narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle.

The abandoned car was found by police locked and secure ten minutes later, and on arrest, Dixon, of Pine Street, South Moor, told police he was “mortal drunk”.

Dixon was given a 12-month driving ban, but the case came back to court, where Judge Christopher Prince added a further 12-months to the disqualification period.
