A SERIES of cultural events at a former Catholic seminary will continue with an organ recital at the weekend.

Matthew Atherton, director of music, at Aysgarth School will perform in St Cuthbert's Chapel at Ushaw College, near Durham, at 2.30pm on Saturday.

The organ recital series promotes an eclectic range of music from the classical organ repertoire, from Renaissance to Baroque and Romantic to contemporary. The latest programme including works by Bach, Mozart and Widor.

Mr Atherton studied organ with Ian Little, James Lancelot and Keith Wright. He holds an MA in Musicology from Durham University and is a Fellow of Trinity College of Music.

On leaving university, he was appointed assistant director of music and organist at Barnard Castle School in County Durham and in 2013 took up the post of director of music at Aysgarth School.

In addition to his demanding teaching post, Mr Atherton is a frequent and well-known organ recitalist, having given concerts at many churches and cathedrals, both great and small.

The Refectory Cafe will be open from 11am to 5pm. A retiring collection will be taken at the organ recital.

Other events in the series of cultural events, include folk, classical, jazz and choral music, plus talks, plays, exhibitions and choral services.
