HUNDREDS of people are up in arms at proposals to build a 350 house development in their village.

Developers Southlands Management Ltd have applied for planning permission to build the homes on land south of Wallnook Lane, in Langley Park.

They already have outline permission to build up to 400 homes on the site, which was approved in May 2013 despite public outcry.

Residents are still hoping to stop the development from going ahead and have started a petition calling for scheme to be scrapped because they say it will add to traffic congestion, stretch resources in the village and uses an access road which is prone to flooding.

Around 550 people have signed the petition, which was started by Langley Park councillor Michael McGaun while dozens more have submitted formal objections to the scheme.

It says: “Another 353 homes will deliver at least another 1,000 residents in to Langley Park and place far too much pressure on the health and educational services which are already stretched.

“Add to this at least another 500-600 vehicles and the five-way lighting system to control traffic, this will all add to huge traffic congestion during peak times.”

Southlands is applying for reserved matters relating to the appearance, landscaping and layout of the estate, which would have 353 houses on a 19.7 hectare site next to the Langley Park Old Rec.

The proposed development would have 70 two and three bedroom affordable homes and 283 private dwellings, which would have two, three or four bedrooms.

Access would be from the north-east corner of the site, with five-way traffic lights installed to manage the additional traffic generated.

Langley Park resident Jamie Oldroyd, who is helping to run an online campaign objecting to the proposal, said: “The plans have been ongoing since 2013 when it was agreed in principle. We thought it had gone quiet but it has reared it’s ugly head again.

“It’s another housing estate, it happens all the time. But it’s not so much to do with the houses as where they are.”

Planning consultant Neil Westwick, on behalf of Southlands, said: “It is considered the proposals will deliver a high quality development on the edge of Langley Park, which has been designed to reflect the character and appearance of the area.”

The company has also agreed to pay £400,000 to improve the surrounding area.
