HOUSES could be built on land at two village pubs.
Applications have been submitted for permission to build on land at the Glendinnings Arms, in Witton Gilbert, and on the the former Masons Arms, West Rainton.
Punch Taverns has made the application to build five houses to the rear of the Glendinnings Arms, which is currently used by geese owned by the pub tenants.
An agent for the national company says the houses will help keep its pubs open.
It said: βIn order to keep the business of these public houses viable our client is pursuing a route to lose the liability of sprawling vacant sites whilst creating a business income related to that site to bolster the income and help other pubs survive.β
A separate application has been made by Paula Atkinson to build five new houses for The Masons Arms, which was demolished in April.
