INDEPENDENT businesses are trying to get customers to spend a fiver in their stores as part of a campaign to get people to shop locally.

Durham City is hosting a Totally Locally Fiver Fest from Friday, June 30 to Monday, July 3 with independent shop owners offering a range of offers and discounts.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets Company, said: “Independent businesses are vital to our city. They make our retail district different from every other high street.

“Did you know that if every household within the DH1 postcode were to spend just £5 each with local independent businesses, it would put a staggering £4.6 million into the local economy?”

  • Durham Business Improvement District (Bid) is also having a week of offers to celebrate of independent businesses, which runs until Friday, July 7.
