A MUCH-LOVED policeman has been remembered as more than 100 of his colleagues ran a ‘mile with a smile’ for charity today.

As part of the annual event, 110 staff ran or walked a mile around headquarters to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation in memory of PC Gavin Smith, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. PC Smith was part of the Police Interceptors team in the Channel 5 TV series.

Fundraisers were joined by PC Smith’s wife, Kezi, and four-year-old daughter Tilly, who received a medal and trophy before enjoying a tour.

Mrs Smith said: “The experience both Gav and I had of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation was positive and gave us hope. In particular for Gav who was due to receive the new immunotherapy treatment, which kept him going in the most difficult of times.”

Deputy Chief Constable Jo Farrell added: “We’re delighted with the support we’ve received from across the force. It shows a strong family ethos and a real desire to raise as much money as possible for a good cause.”

Last year’s event raised money for the Nicola Hughes Appeal Fund.

The fund helped improve the quality of life for Nicola, who due to complications with her Lupus condition had to have her leg amputated.

She completed this year’s run on crutches with her new prosthetic leg.
