ANYONE who was inspired by a weekend of racing at one of the oldest regattas in the country is invited to take part in a rowing competition for complete beginners.

The Allcomers Regatta, which takes place on the same course as last weekend’s Durham Regatta, is aimed at giving complete beginners a chance to give the sport a go.

Organised by Durham Amateur Rowing Club (DARC), crews are invited to take part in the fun event on Sunday, July 9.

Crews can have a maximum of one experienced rower and will use stable boats, which are easier for beginners to get to grips with, to negotiate 300m along the River Wear, next to the Racecourse.

Colin Lawson, publicity secretary for DARC, said: “This is a fun event using stable boats for those who have never rowed before but who would like to have a go.

“All you need is four people who can get together to form a crew. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm!”

Prior to the day, crews will get four coached practice sessions with one of the club’s volunteer coaches and are guaranteed at least two races.

All the equipment is provided.

The closing date for entries is Wednesday, June 28.
