THOUSANDS of people lined the banks of the River Wear for the 184th Durham Regatta over the weekend.

Racing took place between Pelaw Wood and Prebends Bridge, over both a 750-metre short course and the traditional longer course, covering a mile-and-a-quarter.

The regatta had more than 2,000 oarsmen and women, including international entries, and up to 10,000 spectators, made up of rowing aficionados and day-trippers.

There were also classic cars, bands and other entertainment for spectators on both days on the Racecourse, in Durham.

Durham School’s Boat Club was one of the founders of Durham Regatta in 1837.

Headmaster Kieran McLaughlin said: “Competing in events like the Durham Regatta gives Durham School pupils the opportunity to showcase their sporting talent while building confidence and nurturing resilience.”
