A GROUP of fundraisers from churches in Durham have been given a diamond award for their efforts in collecting thousands of pounds for charity.

The group of 15 churches, which have been working together since 2010, have consistently raise more than £20,000 for Christian Aid during its week of fundraising each May.

Christian Aid is giving out the awards this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the annual fundraising drive.

Chief executive Loretta Minghella presented the award to Fred Robinson, Elizabeth James and Sarah Lawrance, who were representing the group, at an event at Durham Cathedral.

Mr Robinson, from Waddington Street United Reformed Church, said: ‘The group developed, so, with input from our friends at the Christian Aid regional office, we heard more about what the charity does and how we can contribute.

“The main thing is that our group meetings are good humoured, interesting, practical and inspiring – and don’t go on for longer than they need to.

“We also get to know more about Christian Aid so we are well-informed and know why we support it. And it’s not all churchy and boring – we enjoy meeting together as a group.”

The group hosts events including collections, coffee mornings, breakfasts and sponsored walks.
