AN annual nostalgia day brought the spirit of 1940s into the heart of Durham on Bank Holiday Monday.

Visitors enjoyed the sights and sounds of wartime Britain with a living history tableau, live music, dancing, markets and more.

Entertainment took place in the Market Place and Walkergate.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “This is a popular event, and loved by all ages.

“The era holds a fascination for children and adults alike and the day’s atmosphere is all the better because market traders and even visitors dress up to make the most of it.

“The day was a tremendous success. We have had loads of people enjoying what has been on display.”

The living history group, Yesterday’s Heroes, dressed in Army uniforms and gave people the opportunity to get up close with military vehicles and equipment from the time and learn more about Britain during the war.

Another group of re-enactors, The Home Guard, were also wandering around.

There was dancing and entertainment from Lindy Jazz, and singing by crooner Jay B was singing in the Market Place.

Also featured was the Heartbeat Bus, built in the 1940s and restored by Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society. It has appeared in the TV show Heartbeat.
