A MINI orchard has been planted in honour of two community stalwarts who have stepped down after years of service.

Former Mayor of Durham John Lightley and Pat Hudson both left Shincliffe Parish Council last year.

Mr Lightley, a former member of Durham City Council, served for more than 20 years while Mrs Hudson was a parish councillor for more than 15 years.

The apple and plum trees were planted in Hill Meadows in High Shincliffe, by children from the village primary school.

Cllr Angela Lee said: “Both of them have made a considerable contribution to High Shincliffe over the last 30 years and the parish council wanted to recognise that and thank them for what they’ve done.

“They are so community spirited we couldn’t let them leave without doing something.”

Mr Lightley said: “We have a wonderful community. We’ve enjoyed it and loved helping.”

Mrs Hudson added: “It was very nice to have a gesture like this. It was quite unexpected.”

The parish council has planted several small orchards in the area and has plans for two more.
