DIVERSIONS will be in place while roads in Durham city centre are resurfaced later this month.

Durham County Council is carrying out the work on parts of New Elvet and Old Elvet, in two phases between Saturday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 25.

The first phase will take place on Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23, with working hours between 7am and 7pm.

It will require the closure of New Elvet from the junction of Leazes Roundabout to the junction of Elvet Crescent.

A short section of Old Elvet will also be closed from its junction with New Elvet to its junction with the County Hotel car park.

A diversion will be in place with signs advising of the route via Old Elvet, Whinney Hill, Hallgarth Street, the A177, A167 and A690.

That section of Old Elvet will remain closed for the second phase of the work, which is taking place on Monday, April 24 and Tuesday, April 25.

New Elvet will be open with two way temporary traffic lights in place.

A diversion will be in place for the closure with signs advising of the route via Old Elvet, Whinney Hill, the A177 and New Elvet.

Brian Buckley, Durham County Council’s strategic highways manager, said: “This work is part of our ongoing programme to maintain the road network across the county.

“We appreciate there will be some disruption to motorists but we have planned these schemes to ensure this is kept to a minimum.

“I’d like to thank motorists in advance for their patience and understanding while the work is carried out.”
