MOTORISTS are warned of disruption on a busy road junction due to resurfacing over much of the weekend.

The work is being carried out on what is known as the Barnes Gyratory, the large roundabout off the A690 Durham Road, in Sunderland, which connects with other key city highways, Queen Alexandra Road, Silksworth Lane and Barnes Park Road.

Closures will start to fall into place at 6pm on Saturday, but with a full closure from 8pm, extending until completion of the work, at some stage on Sunday afternoon.

Diversions for road users will be in place, via Silksworth Lane and Premier Road, throughout the period of the closure.

A new low temperature asphalt, reducing steam and compaction time, has enabled the closure to be kept to a minimum.

Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for city services, councillor Michael Mordey, said: “We know the Barnes Gyratory is always very busy and this is why these necessary works are timetabled for a Saturday night and into Sunday.

Meanwhile, further resurfacing is taking place on Rydal Avenue and Windermere Avenue, in Easington Lane, overnight, and is expected to be completed this afternoon, with a warning that local bus services will be affected.
