A MARRIED couple were charity heroes when they wowed judges to be crowned champions at a dance contest.

Suzanne and Nick Brown, from Durham, danced their way to victory at a Strictly-inspired event held at Rainton Meadows Arena, near Houghton-le-Spring to raise money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice.

The couple, who have been married for three years, were crowned Strictly St Cuthbert’s Champions after an impressive cha cha to Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero.

Account manager Suzanne said: “Never in my dreams did I think we would win. I’m so shocked and surprised.

“My Dad is currently receiving treatment for cancer and the treatment he has received has been second to none. I’m so thankful to everyone.

“I take comfort in knowing that St Cuthbert’s is there to help with the non-medical treatment for both patients and their family.”

Prison officer husband Nick Brown added: “The lads back at work won’t believe me.”

A crowd of over 250 attended the event, which raised more than £10,000 for the Durham hospice.

Nine couples from the region competing in the event received free training from The Dudman Academy of Performing Arts on Fenham and Zazz Dance and Performing Arts Academy in Houghton- le- Spring ahead of Saturday night’s Grand Finale.

Laura Barker Development Manager at St Cuthbert’s Hospice said “We were so impressed by all of the dancers who took part in the Grand Finale.

“They really put on a spectacular show and have helped to raise an incredible amount for St Cuthbert’s.

“After the show we had five couples express an interest in taking part next year.”
