THE custodians of Durham Cathedral have urged people to use their last chance to vote for heritage site to get a prestigious title.

Durham Cathedral was nominated by best-selling author Bill Bryson for the BBC Countryfile Magazine awards 2017, with voting closing before midnight on Tuesday.

The Very Revd Andrew Tremlett, Dean of Durham Cathedral, said: “Being nominated for this wonderful award has given us a fantastic opportunity to reflect on what Durham Cathedral means to the more than 700,000 people that visit us each year.

“Many people know Durham for the stunning architecture of the cathedral and castle on the World Heritage site.

“What is less well known is the cathedral’s stewardship of a major part of the beautiful woodlands and riverbanks around us.

“The cathedral also continues to be, first and foremost, a place of spirituality, sanctuary and worship for many of our visitors, and is a site with a living heritage.”

Durham Cathedral has thanked all those who have voted so far, and hope to bring this award back to the region for the second year running following Hadrian’s Wall’ success last year. Embleton Bay and the Farne Islands are also up for awards this year.
