THOUSANDS of runners are expected to tackle Durham’s cobbled hills with the return of a run around the city’s historic centre.

The second annual Prince Bishops Durham City Run was launched by organiser Steve Cram, sponsors and runners from the area.

The Northern Echo:

The 2017 event will take place on Wednesday, July 19 and will feature 5k and 10k races.

Last year more than 2,000 people took part in the inaugural event and organisers are expecting even more people to take to the streets of the city in July.

North-East athletics legend Steve Cram, whose company Events of the North is organising the run, said: “We had a great first year last year and we’ve got Prince Bishops back on board as a sponsor which is really important to the event.

“It’s a great way for us all to showcase the beautiful backdrop we have here. We want to create a big atmosphere and something a bit unusual and different.”

He added: “There is something for everybody, from beginners to more established runners and club runners as well.”

Marjorie Dodds, Chester-le-Street town crier, announced the opening of entries with a Valentine’s Day inspired ode during the launch in Durham’s Market Place.

The event is being sponsored by Durham County Council and Prince Bishops Shopping Centre.

Council leader Cllr Simon Henig said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Steve and all the runners back again.

“It was spectacular last year with thousands of people against the historic background of the city and cathedral. It’s one of the things that makes this race special and why we are so keen to have a race through the streets of Durham.”

Cllr Maria Plews, cabinet member for leisure, said: “For me what’s great is the fun aspect that can get people to give it a go. Running is really good for health and I hope people come because it’s fun and keep going because that’s important too.”

Georgina Thomson, from Prince Bishops, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be supporting the run again in 2017.

“The city was buzzing with runners and spectators and we hope this year it will be even bigger and better.”

  • The 10k run costs £24 for unaffiliated runners and £22 for club members. The 5k run is £15 or £13 for club runners.
