A LIVE version of Desert Island Discs comes to Durham Cathedral next week as the Dean of Durham shares his musical picks.

The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett will be interviewed by Baroness Maeve Sherlock of Durham, with his choices ranging from the choral music to The Corrs.

The event, in aid of the Durham Cathedral Choir Association, will be held at 7pm on Friday February 17. Dean Tremlett will discuss his life, from his younger days in Plymouth to political life and the 2011 Royal Wedding at Westminster Abbey via Cambridge, Rotterdam and India. All proceeds will go towards supporting Durham Cathedral Choir Association (DCCA).

He said: “Music has been an integral part of my life since childhood, having grown up in an extremely musical family. “Since arriving in Durham last year it has been a pleasure to experience the stunning music provided so regularly by Durham Cathedral Choir and the Choristers.

“I am delighted that proceeds from this event will go towards supporting the marvellous work of the Cathedral Choir.

“I am thoroughly looking forward to discussing not only my life in the Church, from the road to ordination through to my arrival in Durham, but also reminding the audience that I, too, was once young and went to pop concerts.

“I hope that the audience can feel that they know me that bit better at the end of the evening.”

Baroness Sherlock, a former special advisor to Gordon Brown during his time as Chancellor and chief executive of charities such as the Refugee Council and the National Council for One Parent Families, has been a Durham Resident since 2005. Having initially arrived for one year to study an MA in Theology, she has never left.

Currently a Tutor and Honorary Fellow at St Chad’s College of Durham University, Baroness Sherlock became friends with Dean Tremlett during his time at Westminster Abbey. Baroness Sherlock said: “I am particularly looking forward to hearing more about his love of trashy pop music.”Wine and canapes will be served. Tickets, costing £10, are available from dcca@durhamcathedral.co.uk, or by writing to the Secretary, The DCCA, the Cathedral Office, Durham, DH1 3EH.
