A TEENAGER has appeared in court accused of burglary after two intruders were disturbed in accommodation above a city centre pub.

Police were alerted following the confrontation in an upstairs flat at The Fighting Cocks, in Durham, on Saturday, at about 12.20pm.

An officer and community support colleague quickly reached the scene, but the alleged intruders had left the North Road premises.

A search was made in the surrounding area and two males answering the descriptions of the suspects seen at the pub ran from officers in St Margaret’s Churchyard, in nearby Crossgate.

Further resources were summoned, including the police helicopter, and the duo were arrested after being found hiding in a garden near to Durham Archery Lawn Tennis Club, off Archery Rise and Clay Lane.

Following questioning over the weekend, 18-year-old Steven Renwick, from Langley Park, near Durham, appeared before magistrates in Peterlee, on Monday, charged with burglary, possession of a bladed article and possession of a class C drug.

The case was sent to Durham Crown Court and the defendant was remanded in custody.

He will next appear at the crown court, on Monday February 20, for a plea hearing.

Police said a 16-year-old youth also arrested, was bailed until mid-February, pending further inquiries.
