ROAD closures are being planned as part of two major developments in Durham city centre.

The closures will accommodate construction work taking place at the former Gates shopping centre and at nearby Milburngate House, which are both currently being demolished.

At the Gates, work is going on from 1pm on Friday, January 27 to 1pm on Sunday, January 29 to bring two cranes onto the site, which are needed to start construction of the new Riverwalk development.

Sidegate will have two-way lights installed between 10am and 6pm on Saturday, and between 8am and 1pm on Sunday.

Framwelgate Waterside will have two way lights from 1pm on Friday to 10am Saturday and will be closed on Saturday between 10am and 6pm and again between 7am and 1pm on Sunday.

Milburngate will be closed from 1pm on Friday to 1pm on Sunday.

A spokeperson at Sir Robert McAlpine, which is doing the work, said: “Traffic management will be in place over the course of the weekend to ensure that access to and from Framwelgate Waterside is maintained throughout. Diversion routes will be appropriately signed.”

Meanwhile there will be a lane closure on the A690 and A691 at the Milburngate roundabout overnight between 8pm and 6am from January 31 to February 2 to allow for part of the demolition of the public counter area of Milburngate House.

A spokeperson for Carillion, which is carrying out the work, said a lane closure was necessary for health and safety reasons because the area being demolished is so close to the road.
