CREATIVE schoolchildren have channelled their inner artist to design thought provoking signs that encourage safe driving.

Concerned that some drivers might not follow a diversion in place at Thinford and detour through Ferryhill and Chilton, the youngsters decided to take action.

Working with Approach Too, children from Chilton, Cleves Cross, Dean Bank and Ferryhill Station Primary Schools have designed powerful signs which ask motorists to “drive like your child lives here”.

Glenys Newby of Approach Too said: “The children are working really hard to keep everybody in their community safe while work at Thinford roundabout takes place.

“They are raising awareness with the road signs and also sharing their message on social media which asks drivers to follow the diversion but if they do use their roads, then to drive with extra care. It’s a real partnership effort.

“Thank you to the Town Councils and Cllr John Lindsay and Chris Orton for bringing the children’s signs to life and the community for their continuing support”

Cllr Lindsay added, “It’s great to see the children take the initiative on road safety rather than waiting for the adults to take action.”
